11th day of Christmas

I was able to get a bunch of these calenders printed for our church family and friends at a really great price. I used the photo I took this fall of the sweet little church in Silver City. You can read more about that here. I would love to go back and see it now, with snow and Christmas lights!

10th day of Christmas

While her sisters were in the school room yesterday having school, and I was in the sewing room sewing, Kaite found yarn in the craft room and decided to decorate one of the little pine trees in daddy's study. It was ALL her idea! Isn't she cute and creative?!?!By the way, school room, sewing room, craft room and daddy's study are all the same room at our house...it just sounds so much fancier to say it that way! Ahhh...it's all good! =)

9th day of Christmas

Once again, I can't take credit for the idea of this 'painting'. I copied Centsational Girl. I have to say that it was one of the easiest, fastest and funnest projects I've done in a while! Maybe I will have to buy some more canvas....MUCH better than sewing!!! I had most of the paints on hand, so I just picked up a cheap canvas and a few 39 cent holiday pics. The rest of the little vignette was made with stuff I already had.
Okay, now that I have drawn your attention to the painting, I have to show you the mantle. Hubby decided that I needed a mantle to decorate and hang stockings from, so he made this without my even asking him! I think it may have had something to do with Kammy asking where we were going to hang stockings this year. He is an old softie when it comes to any of his girls! He used a fence post scrap for the front and other wood scraps he had lying around for the rest of it. I LOVE the color he stained it!
Then, I found these scraps of Christmas fabric for a buck a yard and was inspired to make new stockings. They are smaller than the old ones, which means I won't have to buy as much 'filler' and I love the old country look they have!
And now, I am off to finish another little project. Have I mentioned that I don't like sewing? Well, when you have four daughters who love fabric stores and plead sweetly for new Christmas skirts...you sometimes do things you don't like so well. Sigh...

8th day of Christmas

Variations of this Pottery Barn knock off are available literally all over the internet. Rather than try to give credit to the first 'copy cat'... since I'm not sure who that is, I'll just tell you how I did mine. I bought me a couple of JoAnn's 60% off candles in an eggshell color and a bottle of Mod Podge. I chose Modge because it is considered safe to burn. That's important in case I want to light these candles someday.

Next, I tore a couple of pages out of an old thrift store hymnal. (You could also print something off the internet or make a photocopy of your favorite song.) I cut the song to fit on the candle and painted the back of it with Modge. Then I stuck it on the candle and painted a few coats of Modge on top. I'm anxious for them to get that slightly burned look. In fact, I wish I had taken the pictures with them lit. You know me though...no patience.

I chose old favorites of everyday type music, but Christmas music would be great too, especially if you were planning on packing them away with the Christmas stuff. I'm thinking mine will stay put a while, because I am kind of enjoying them! :)

Tiny Talk Tuesday

So, I am running late today but I have been busy with the tiny people. Yesterday, Kammy and Kayla had well child checkups along with routine immunizations. They also got the flu shot (which I am now regretting). They have a great doctor who did not push it on me--I chose it because we have always had them and done quite well with them in the past. This year's included the H1N1 though and they seem to have gotten a little sick from them--especially at first. I am very thankful that they are better this evening. Of course, Kayla was very brave for her shots, but so was Kammy. She cried real tears, but didn't make a sound! Kayla is still so petite and remains in the 7th percentile for weight. Meanwhile, Kammy is in the 87th! Kayla and Kammy enjoyed some special time together even if it did include some rather unpleasant events. They are really quite good about making even the difficult times special. I am proud of them!

Now for some of the funnies:
Yesterday at the doctor, Kammy told him she had quite a sweet tooth and then proceeded to show him which one it was.
Kammy: "Dr. Hammer, my nostriles don't work very well." She's has had a few sniffles lately and I guess thought the doctor ought to know about it.
Kaite has been playing dollies a lot lately and the other day her dolly was saying, "waaa, waaa" a lot and she was saying, "shhh, shhh" a lot. I guess she finally got tired of it because she sighed, took her dolly and threw her in the closet and shut the door!
My girls rather dislike unloading the dishwasher, so the other day I caught them washing and drying all the dishes by hand so that they would not have to mess with that unpleasant chore.
Kammy: "Mommy, I want one of those bending computers for christmas!" (laptop)
Kammy: "My legs are so tired of moving my feet around all day!"
Kammy, while snuggling by the fire with mommy and watching it snow: "I just love these good old days, don't you mommy?"
Linking up for tiny talk again!

7th day of Christmas

~Caramel Apple Gingerbread Cake~

I saw this recipe a while back on Tidy Mom and knew I needed to try it. It was incredibly simple, which I am all for especially at this busy time of year. Don't let the box and can ingredients scare you though, it received five stars from my hubby! While I am more of a toffee and caramel type of gal, I have to admit that it does taste quite Christmas-ey!

~Caramel Apple Gingerbread Cake~

1 package gingerbread mix

1 can apple pie filling

Caramel flavored icecream topping

whipped cream

Heat oven to 350*

Grease a 9X13 inch glass pan.

Prepare gingerbread mix according to cake directions on box.

Fold in apple pie filling.

Put in pan and bake 30-35 minutes.

Allow to cool about 30 minutes.

Top with caramel topping, whipped cream and sprinkle with cinnamon or nutmeg.

The 6th day of Christmas

Saturday evening, we took the kids and went to the Night Light Parade. They always enjoy the parade so much as well as the lights downtown. It's becoming rather traditional to take supper at the Dairy Queen prior to parade time and works out well since we get a great spot on the beginning of the route. When the parade is over, it's just a few quick turns and we are out of the bedlam and on our way home!

5th day of Christmas

"Come over to my house this Christmas, and bring the kids!"
....God. I love church ornaments. This is one of my favorites! In fact, someday I'd like to have a whole collection of them.
