Laying up Treasure

Every fall when canning season begins, and we lay up jar upon jar of treasures for the winter months, I think of how in life we are constantly laying up treasures in Heaven. Only in that place, nothing ever spoils or goes "out of date."

I really love doing this 9 days out of 10, but I must admit that when the school day is long and trying I sometimes am tempted to wish that my garden wasn't doing quite so well. I can't bear to waste anything, so stay busy I do!
Here is an example of what one of those rougher days looks like on paper:
Kaderick and mommy have had a bit of a rough school day. Kaderick gets to choose a reward from the dollar store every time he completes a certain amount of work. This is usually every 2-3 weeks. He has recently discovered that a little used shop in downtown Caldwell has some pretty neat things for a similar price so we were all set to take a trip there at the close of the school day. I’m not sure what is with him today, but he has whined and demanded all day. Finally, I gave ...him time out and a warning, “No Joe’s Emporium today if this behavior continues.” Well, it continued in a major way, so now we are having a really good day because we are learning a valuable lesson that will “help him and make his life easier in the long run” and all that jazz. No Joe’s this time. 😢
He’s over there doing math now....the answer is thirteen, and he quietly says, “The answer should be HURT-teen!” (his feelings)
The little "HURT-teen quip....so cute!

Our neighbors had a yard sale the other day. The kids wanted to go, so I said Kalli could take them. Kaderick came back with this HUGE stuffed dog. He said, “Don’t panic mommy, don’t panic! It was only three dollars and I also bought a VERY educational book for 25 cents. Also, I will definitely let you wash it before I play with it!”
He was trying very hard to think of everything I might say I guess, and have an answer for it!
PS. He named the dog Beeftoven.

The answer to #2 was supposed to be “father.” He said, “Well, I’m just going to go ahead and put mother in there to be more truthful.” 😂

A dear friend of mine pointed out that he was no doubt talking about seeing me as a "keeper of the home" and I do think that's what he means. Momma leads his days, school and otherwise. Momma is the schedule planner, the meal planner, the "keeper" of his days. Daddy really does lead, but his days are so busy with work and church that most of what Kaderick sees firsthand is momma. Daddy/Kaderick time is often spent in play and recreation....I don't think that looks especially like leadership when you're 6. Someday he will understand how very much daddy led from behind the scenes and PROVIDED so that momma could give 100% to the children.

One of their favorite things to do on hot summer afternoons is to visit the fountains at Indian Creek Promenade. It's become a habit when goals are completed early. Sometimes Rick or Kayla will join us-Rick working usually, and Kayla studying.

We were getting ready to head out for a busy evening and I saw Kaderick putting some of his plus plus building toys in a bag. He said, “I doubt I will need these, but it’s just always nice to have some plus plus in case
of an emergency.”
I guess boredom is an emergency when you’re six.

I couldn't resist the tomato picture. Aren't they beautiful?? NOTHING like garden tomatoes!

Kalli and I made this amazingly easy peach pie for Sunday dessert and I've been bombarded with requests for the recipe. I think you'll love it. Soooo easy!
Graham cracker crust of course and then just mix 2 bricks of cream cheese, 8 oz cool whip, 1/2 C sugar, 1/3 C powdered vanilla coffee creamer and a box of peach jello. Garnish with fresh peaches and whipped topping.

This batch of salsa turned out especially pretty!

This photo signifies that cowboy candy was in the making. It's not quite as easy as a lot of things I do and in fact, I always say I'm not ever doing it again. Alas! I love my husband dearly and always make it again.

(commentators version)
The other day I had a bit of a rough day. A long day, a tiring day, a disappointing day, a hard day, and a sad day, but then I stopped and thought about all that had happened and how good God had been to me yet AGAIN and decided it was a wonderful day. It started with yard work, which is always fun. Then school which went pretty well too, especially for the little challenging guy. Then there were some bumps in my afternoon and some tears on my cheeks; but later, one of my students wanted to know what “transfigured” meant, so I looked up that verse (Mark 9:2) and after explaining it to the best of my ability, I read on down to verse 8 which said, “Suddenly, when they looked around, they no longer saw anyone with them except Jesus.” And suddenly I looked around and saw nothing and no one but Jesus! My problems looked very small in his capable hands. When my eyes and my burdens are on him, how the perspective changes! Yes, I had a friend to confide in today, a husband to love on me and kiss away my tears, and I had daughters to talk with between their schoolwork and while I canned salsa and cowboy candy, but most of all I had Jesus! And my friends, he makes life complete!
After I shared the above with my husband, he took my simple little thoughts and made a "masterpiece message" of them. No, but Jesus really did help him PREACH this Sunday and I especially LOVED hearing it expounded upon! I am so blessed!

According to Kaderick: "The order of humans goes like this....." and he holds his hand a little higher off the ground as he names them off....
"1. Babies
2. Toddlers
3. Middle aged kids
4. Regular kids (hand is now level with his own head.)...
5. Random people (holds hand above his head as far up as he can reach.)"

And with that, I'm signing off for another week....or so. See ya all later!
