A Determined Tree of His Planting
Blessed is the man that trusteth in the Lord and whose hope is in the Lord. For he shall be as a tree planted by the waters, and that spreadeth out her roots by the river, and shall not see when heat cometh, but her leaf shall be green, and shall not be careful in the year of drought, neither shall cease from yielding fruit.
The tree spoken of in Jeremiah 17:7-8, is a model of determination. Never withering, never failing to yield frui...t. The winds of life only prove to give it character and unique shape. It is green and fresh because it is planted by this livegiving source: the water of life. Determination is a virtue needed in every aspect of life. Determination is what got us here today. Our determination--and that of our parents and teachers.
From here on out, it is up to us. We must determine to become whatever God wants us to be. We all have dreams for our future, but without determination, they will remain only dreams, and without God's approval and guidance they will prove to be our worst nightmare.
I know a little girl who had a nightmare once. she awoke in a panic and cried out loudly for her father. He came running through the dark of night, and as he gathered the small girl up in his arms, he asked,"What's wrong, baby?" But the little girl had already surrendered herself to the father's stong arms, so she sleepily answered, "Nothing. Nothing is wrong." See, in the Father's arms she felt safe and at rest in spite of the nightmare.
This simple and personal illustration (that little girl was my sister) reminds me that God knows the plans He has for us, and with our determination to be planted by his side, He will bring us to an expected end.
Last year, my dad the privilege of meeting Pearl Harbor Vet, Delton E. Walling. In 1921, at the age of 18, Delton was determined to join the United states Navy. After hitch-hiking 190 miles to the nearest recruiting station, he was declared unfit because of a finger injury received while boxing in high school. He refused to give up though, and finally the doctor told him if he'd have the finger cut off, he could declare Delton fit. So, with great determination, Delton paid the doctor his last twenty dollars to cut off his finger. Delton served his country without regret.
As Babe Ruth once said, "You just can't beat the man who never gives up." And, as God's Word says,"....Blessed is the man who trusteth in the Lord, for he shall be like a tree planted by the waters."
I'm deternined to bloom wherever God plants me. Planted by waters that will satisfy my thirst. Rooted by the river of life. Unchanged by the heat and drought of summer, or the snows and bitter cold of winter. I will fear nothing--content in the Father's arms, bearing the fruits of determination according to the Master's plan for my life.
